Drop•Rename is a fast, simple, and safe file renaming tool. It is best suited for batch rename operations. It renames files and folders by letting you choose whether to append or insert a string to a filename, remove a string from a filename, search for a string in a filename and replace it with another string, or change the case (uppercase or lowercase) of a filename.
How much does Drop•Rename cost?
Nothing, Drop•Rename is absolutely free. You are completely free to distribute Drop•Rename under the following conditions:
1) You do not charge for Drop•Rename (shipping & handling and media costs excluded)
2) You include this Read Me file along with Drop•Rename.
How do I use Drop•Rename?
Using Drop•Rename is simple. Drop any file, folder, or mixture of the two onto the Drop•Rename icon (or an alias to it). You will be presented with a dialog with which you can setup your rename criteria, describing how you want the files renamed. The specific options will be described in greater detail later in this document.
Balloon help is completely supported so check it out while you’re using it.
What features does Drop•Rename have?
Here is a list of the core features provided by Drop•Rename and a description of each feature:
Append/Insert String:
Allows you add a text string to either the beginning or end of a filename.
Remove String:
Allows you to search for a text string and remove it from the filename. You have the option of searching and removing text strings recursively (it will not only remove the first occurance of the text string but, all occurances of it). You can also specify whether you want case sensitive searches or to ignore case.
Search & Replace:
Allows you to search for a text string and replace it with another text string. You have the option of searching and replacing text strings recursively (it will not only replace the first occurance of the text string but, all occurances of it). You can also specify whether you want case sensitive searches or to ignore case.
Change Case:
Allows you to change the case (uppercase or lowercase) of the filename.
What options does Drop•Rename offer?
Look Inside Folders:
Allows you to rename files inside of folders to any folder depth. Maximum folder depth is limited only by available memory.
Rename Files:
Gives you the option to rename files.
Rename Folders:
Gives you to the option to rename folders.
Refresh Finder Display:
Gives you the option to force the finder to refresh it's display when you have renamed a file. This lets you quickly see the effect of the renaming operation.
Recursive:
Allows you to search recursively for a text string. This gives you the option to search the same filename more than once to remove all text strings found, not just the first one.
Case Sensitive:
Lets you specify whether you want case sensitive searches or to ignore case.
What does Drop•Rename require to run?
Drop•Rename should run on any Macintosh running System 7.x.x. It has been tested on a PowerMac 6100/60, Macintosh Quadra 840av, Macintosh IIfx, and Macintosh II. It has been tested on the following System's: System 7.1.0, System 7.1.2, and System 7.5.0 (with and without System 7.5 Update 1.0).
What features are you going to add in the future?
This version didn’t get any of the features I said I was going to add in the previous version’s read-me. Mainly cause users requested features I hadn’t thought of (good ones too) and I wanted to add those before adding the stuff I wanted. But, here’s a few things I still want to add (and might actually get finished):
1) Ability to Insert or remove a certain number of characters from the beginning or end of a filename.
2) Ability to insert or remove a string after a certain number of characters.
3) Wildcard searches
Are there any known problems?
There are a couple slight problems that I’ve found (or have been reported to me).
The first one is that when dragging aliases to the Drop•Rename icon (or an alias to it), the Finder resolves the aliases before Drop•Rename gets ahold of them so the originals will be renamed, not the aliases. Since the Finder does it before Drop•Rename is launched, I think it’s out of my control. If anyone knows how I can get around this, leave me mail. There is a workaround for this though. Just put the aliases you want to rename inside a folder and drag that folder onto Drop•Rename and it will work correctly.
The second problem I’ve found is that when changing the case of files/folders, the Finder doesn’t properly update the files/folders that are currently showing in the Finder. I’m telling the Finder to update the name but, it doesn’t listen for some reason. It only occurs when changing the case of the name. Again, if anyone knows how I can get around this, leave me mail.
These are the only errors that I’ve found (or have been reported to me) and both of them seem to be things I have no control over but, if I find away, I’ll release an fix.
What did you use to create Drop•Rename?
Drop•Rename was written in C using Metrowerks CodeWarrior 5.5. Resources were created and edited with Resorcerer 1.2.5. Icons were created by AP.
